The Origin of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is widely valued for its excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility, and toughness, making it a critical material in sectors like machinery, petroleum, chemicals, food processing, and pharmaceuticals. The story of stainless steel dates back to World War I, when a British metallurgist, Harry Brearley, was commissioned by the military to improve firearm materials. At that time, rifle barrels used by soldiers wore out quickly, and Brearley was tasked with developing a more durable alloy.

In 1916, Brearley secured a British patent for the stainless steel he had developed and began producing it on a large scale. What was once an overlooked piece of scrap metal became a revolutionary discovery, and Brearley earned the title “Father of Stainless Steel.”

During the war, British rifles frequently became unusable due to barrel erosion. Brearley, focused on solving this issue, tested various steel and alloy types from different sources. Alongside his assistant, he carried out numerous performance tests on these materials across different machines.

One day, they evaluated a high-chromium domestic alloy. While it failed the wear resistance tests, they recorded the data and discarded the sample in a corner. Months later, during a warehouse cleanup, an assistant found the shiny piece of steel and brought it to Brearley’s attention.

The metal, still gleaming and untarnished, intrigued Brearley. Tests showed that although it wasn’t wear-resistant, it had exceptional resistance to acids, alkalis, and salts—qualities that made it highly corrosion-resistant.

Interestingly, this particular steel had actually been developed earlier by a German named Maurer in 1912, who hadn’t recognized its practical applications.

Realizing its potential in everyday use rather than weaponry, Brearley began crafting utensils from the material—fruit knives, forks, spoons, trays, and folding knives—marking the beginning of stainless steel's integration into domestic life.
